Book Launches at A Southern War Symposium

War TrophiesHell-Bent: Australia's Leap Into the Great War

By Christine Winter.

There were two book launches during the symposium that added to the spirit of intellectual rigor and scholarly generosity, exploring the histories and legacies of WWI and the Pacific.

Frank Bongiorno (Australian National University) launched Hell-Bent: Australia’s Leap into the Great War, by Douglas Newton (Scribe, 2014).

Peter Stanley (University of New South Wales, Canberra) undertook the novel task of a book-preview launch of War Trophies or Curios? by Barry Craig, Ron Vanderwal and Christine Winter (Museum Victoria Publishing, 2015).

Sometimes the best plans come to naught, and the symposium that was to surround the new book with further discussions and scholarly debates had to be conducted without the actual book, which will now be available in early 2015.

Peter Stanley said: ‘It’s a bit like having a christening for a baby in utero, but we are confident that the book will appear, and can celebrate it at this day devoted to exploring the encounters between colonial powers and indigenous peoples of the South-West Pacific in the Great War.’
